Autumn in the Deep

Bernd Handau, an engineer by trade, brings a natural affinity for numbers, symbols, and structure into his artistic practice. His work is deeply rooted in geometric language—circles, triangles, and squares—forms that echo throughout nature, science, and the cosmos. Drawing inspiration from principles such as the Golden Ratio, Handau uses mathematics as both a guide and a foundation to construct visually compelling compositions.
Equally influential is his German heritage, particularly the legacy of ancient Teutonic and Germanic cultures. This ancestral influence emerges in his work as a sense of the primitive and the ritualistic—relic-like forms that evoke tribal histories and timeless symbolism. Yet, these elements are presented through a distinctly modern, minimalist lens, creating a striking balance between past and present.
Handau’s body of work moves across a wide conceptual spectrum. His wooden pieces often feel ancient and grounded, while his abstract works push toward the futuristic—featuring vivid neon colors and atmospheric compositions that transport viewers into other worldly realms. This duality reflects his ongoing exploration of order and imagination.
As Handau describes it: “On one hand, my work is a mixture of simple and orderly mathematical forms. On the other, it invites viewers to imagine magical and otherworldly landscapes.”
Handau has exhibited in numerous galleries in Reno and beyond. His recent exhibitions include Cupid’s Curse (2023) and Blending of Two Minds (2022) at Nevada Fine Arts Gallery, as well as multiple appearances in the Reno Tahoe International Art Show (2022, 2023, 2025). He has also shown work with the Sierra Arts Foundation.
He is a member of the Sierra Arts Foundation and the Latimer Art Club, and his work is represented online by Saatchi Art. Handau lives and works in Reno, Nevada.
